“I’d rather watch El Clasico than the Ghana Premier League” – Bechem United owner
Bechem United president Kingsley Owusu Achau has cast doubt on the attractiveness of the Ghana Premier League, admitting he would rather watch El Clasico than a domestic league match if both games were played at the same time.
The outspoken football administrator believes the Ghanaian top flight is struggling to capture the interest of supporters, citing a lack of excitement and broader issues affecting the competition’s appeal.
Speaking in an interview with Hot FM, Owusu Achau said the quality and entertainment value offered by marquee European fixtures make them a more appealing option for football fans.
“I would rather watch El Clasico than a local match when they are playing at the same time; the local league is not attractive,” he said.
His comments reflect the ongoing debate about the Ghana Premier League’s ability to compete for attention in an era where supporters have easy access to Europe’s elite competitions.
Despite the abundance of football talent in Ghana, the domestic league has continued to grapple with declining attendances, concerns over scheduling, inconsistent officiating, and the overall matchday experience. These challenges have made it increasingly difficult for clubs to attract fans to stadiums on a regular basis.
Owusu Achau’s remarks are likely to reignite discussions about what stakeholders, including the Ghana Football Association, clubs and sponsors, can do to improve the league’s image and make it a more compelling product for supporters.
While the Bechem United president has questioned the league’s appeal, his side will turn their attention to on-field matters this weekend when they host FC Samartex at the Nana Gyeabour Park in Matchday 10 of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League, with the Hunters aiming to secure all three points in front of their home fans.
