Why NPP Supporters Showed Up at Court for Chairman Wontumi – Nana B Explains

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gathered at the court recently to stand behind their Ashanti Regional Chairman, Chairman Wontumi, but they were met with locked gates. According to Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B and the NPP’s 2nd National Vice Chairman, the court did not sit because the government owes the judiciary, forcing court workers to go on strike. Nana B made these comments while explaining why the party turned up in full force to support Wontumi.

Speaking to the press, Nana B said the NPP stands firmly behind Chairman Wontumi and everyone else facing court charges. He explained that the party’s presence at every court hearing is a deliberate show of solidarity. “Whenever Chairman Wontumi has a court hearing, the NPP, as a party, will be present in court to demonstrate our support for him,” he said. This, he noted, is part of the party’s commitment to standing by its members during difficult times.

Nana B did not stop at the court strike issue. He also took aim at the government, alleging that it is arresting anyone who speaks against it. He compared this to what he described as the government’s failure to intercept cocaine shipments leaving Ghana’s ports. He cited an incident in which Lebanon arrested an individual who allegedly smuggled cocaine from Ghana to Lebanon. According to him, this shows a troubling double standard where the state goes after critics while drug trafficking slips through the cracks.

The NPP’s show of support for Chairman Wontumi is not new. The party has consistently rallied behind its members when they face legal challenges, and Nana B’s comments suggest this will continue. However, the court strike has added a new twist to the situation. With judicial workers on strike over unpaid allowances, many cases across the country are being affected, and Wontumi’s case is just one of them.

In conclusion, the NPP’s message is clear: they will stand with Chairman Wontumi no matter what. But the bigger issue raised by Nana B is the state of the judiciary and the government’s priorities. If the courts cannot sit because workers are owed money, then justice is delayed for everyone, not just NPP members.
