GRIDCo CEO gives December deadline for improved power supply in Ashanti Region

GRIDCo Chief Executive Officer, Ing. Frank Asirifi Otchere, has announced that ongoing power infrastructure upgrades are expected to improve electricity supply in the Ashanti Region by December 2026, following months of complaints about intermittent outages.

Speaking during a briefing to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Otchere said the company was prioritising key projects in Greater Kumasi to strengthen the transmission network and meet the region’s growing electricity demand.

He disclosed that GRIDCo was adding a fifth feeder to the four existing feeders supplying the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The company is also upgrading the Kumasi–Anwomaso transmission line, including the Anwomaso-to-Ridge section, to increase its capacity from approximately 360 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts.

The transmission line upgrade is expected to be completed in November, while the other priority works are scheduled to be finished by December.

“What we want to say is that all the projects are important, but these ones are critical. We cannot wait to complete them. That is why we have prioritised these projects to ensure they are all completed by December,” Otchere said.

The upgrades are expected to improve grid reliability and reduce the pressure on the electricity transmission network as demand from residential and industrial consumers continues to grow.

Residents in Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region have repeatedly complained about power interruptions, with some calling on authorities to introduce a load-shedding timetable.
