For decades, these men and women served our nation diligently. paying hefty taxes through PAYE throughout their careers. Yet, upon retirement, they continue to be heavily taxed on their pensions — the very fruits of their lifelong contribution to the government.

I submit that this is unfair. Retirement should be a time of dignity and security, not continued financial punishment.

With the rising cost of living and medical expenses, many of our elders are struggling.

I therefore call on National Treasury to review the Income Tax Act provisions on public sector pensions; introduce a fairer threshold or exemption for retired public servants; and recognise the decades of tax already paid during active service.

To honour our retirees is to honour public service itself. Such reforms would restore fairness and align with the government’s commitment to improve the quality of life for all citizens, especially the elderly. – Makwela Matome, Modimolle
