Businessman Begs KRA Chair Ndiritu Muriithi To Save Them From KSh2.7M China Container Charges

A Kenyan businessman has appealed to Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Board Chairman Ndiritu Muriithi to intervene over what he describes as unfair and discriminatory taxation practices affecting traders importing goods from China.

In a video circulating on social media, the trader alleges that some businessmen are being charged approximately KSh 1.6 million for container consolidation, while others are reportedly being subjected to charges of up to KSh 2.7 million.

He questions the apparent disparity, alleging that businessmen perceived to be friendly to President William Ruto’s administration are benefiting from lower charges while others are facing significantly higher costs.

The trader argues that the alleged unequal treatment is placing an increasingly heavy financial burden on businesses, particularly those owned by members of the Kikuyu community, who he claims are disproportionately affected.

He warns that continued high charges could push some businesses to the brink of closure, threatening livelihoods, employment and the survival of enterprises that depend on imports from China.

In his emotional appeal, the businessman invokes the biblical story of Queen Esther, urging Muriithi to rise to the occasion and speak up for struggling entrepreneurs from his community.

He likens the KRA Chairman’s potential intervention to Esther’s courage in standing up to save her people, calling on him to use his position and influence to seek a fair resolution.

The trader’s concerns raise broader questions about transparency, consistency and fairness in the administration of customs charges on consolidated cargo from China.

He is calling for KRA to investigate the alleged differences in charges, explain the criteria used in determining container valuations and ensure that all importers are treated equally regardless of political connections.

The key question now is whether KRA will address these allegations and provide clarity on why some importers reportedly pay significantly more than others for the same China containers.

NB: The allegations made by the trader have not been independently verified, and KRA’s response to the specific claims would be important in establishing the facts about the KSh1.6M vs KSh2.7M charges.

Do you think KRA Chairman Ndiritu Muriithi should intervene as Queen Esther to save Kikuyu traders from KSh2.7M China container charges?
