It’s A Direct Insult to Ghanaians — Awal Mohammed Slams Government’s Explanation Of Cocaine Bust
A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Communications Team, Awal Mohammed, has criticised the government’s response to Ghana’s latest cocaine-related controversy, accusing its communicators of making explanations that undermine the intelligence of Ghanaians.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Awal reacted to reports that a Syrian national had been arrested at Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut with approximately 40 kilogrammes of suspected cocaine. The suspect was reportedly travelling from Accra, Ghana, with the substance allegedly hidden in two pieces of luggage.
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) confirmed the arrest, stating that it followed a coordinated operation involving Ghanaian and Lebanese drug enforcement agencies. The Commission also revealed that investigations were ongoing to identify and arrest individuals suspected of assisting the traveller in Ghana.
However, Awal expressed dissatisfaction with the explanation provided by government communicators, whom he referred to as the “Cocaine Coast communicators.”
“The Cocaine Coast communicators are at it again,” he wrote, arguing that their claim of cooperation with Lebanese authorities was an insult to the intelligence of Ghanaians.
He also raised concerns about the possible consequences of the incident for Ghana’s international image, claiming that the country’s reputation was suffering on the global stage.
Awal’s comments come as the reported cocaine seizure in Lebanon continues to generate political reactions and public discussion about Ghana’s efforts to prevent drug trafficking across its borders.
The incident has also drawn attention to the security measures at the country’s airports and the ability of drug enforcement agencies to detect and prevent the movement of suspected narcotics.
Concluding his Facebook post, the NPP communicator questioned the circumstances that had led to the growing international scrutiny of Ghana, asking: “How did we get here?”
