10 reasons you should never make yourself responsible for your wife’s siblings’ upkeep

Helping your wife’s family is not necessarily a bad thing. However, there is a difference between supporting your in-laws occasionally and becoming financially responsible for their everyday needs.

Some husbands find themselves paying school fees, buying food, covering rent and handling personal expenses for their wife’s siblings without ever agreeing to take on that responsibility.

Here are 10 reasons a husband should be careful about making his wife’s siblings his financial responsibility.

1. You have your own family to provide for. Your wife and children, if you have any, should not suffer because you have taken on financial responsibilities that were never part of your household budget.

2. The requests may never stop. Once you become known as the person who pays the bills, relatives may continue bringing new expenses to you.

3. You may become their permanent financial plan. Instead of making efforts to become independent, some relatives may begin depending on your income for almost everything.

4. It can create tension in your marriage. Your wife may feel obligated to help her siblings, while you may feel that too much of your income is going outside your immediate household.

5. You may struggle to save and invest. Regularly paying other people’s expenses can affect your ability to buy property, build a business or prepare for retirement.

6. You may lose respect when you cannot provide. Some relatives who become accustomed to your financial support may turn against you when you eventually say you cannot afford another request.

7. You may have little control over how the money is spent. You could be paying school fees or rent while the beneficiaries make other financial decisions that undermine the support you provide.

8. It can create unhealthy expectations. Your wife’s siblings may begin treating your assistance as an entitlement rather than a favour.

9. You may be blamed for family problems. If you help one sibling and cannot help another, relatives may accuse you of favouritism or being selfish.

10. You could neglect your own future. Every cedi committed to an open-ended family obligation is money you may not be able to put towards your own long-term plans.

Supporting your wife’s siblings when you can afford to do so is a generous gesture. But it should be a decision made jointly with your wife, not an automatic obligation simply because you married into the family. If the support is ongoing, both partners should agree on a realistic budget and expectations.
