Mahama Drops Another Big Announcement For Ghanaians About Russia

President John Dramani Mahama has reached six key agreements with Russian President Vladimir Putin as Ghana and Russia seek to deepen cooperation across several sectors.

The commitments followed bilateral talks held on October 30, 2026, during the Third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow. The discussions focused on strengthening diplomatic ties and identifying areas where both countries could work together for mutual benefit.

One of the major outcomes was Russia’s readiness to support Ghana’s proposed 2,000-megawatt nuclear power project. The initiative is expected to increase electricity generation, strengthen energy security and provide additional power for industrial activities.

Both countries also discussed expanding cooperation in defence and security, with an interest in developing stronger partnerships in these areas.

Agriculture featured prominently in the discussions, as the two governments agreed to improve collaboration and promote opportunities that could support their agricultural sectors.

In education, Russia committed to providing more scholarship opportunities for Ghanaian students. The move is expected to give more young people access to higher education and professional training in Russian institutions.

Another important agreement involved reviving the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), which serves as a framework for coordinating bilateral relations and implementing joint projects.

Reactivating the commission is expected to improve communication between both governments, monitor existing agreements and create opportunities for further cooperation.

The six commitments cover energy, defence, agriculture, education and diplomatic coordination, reflecting efforts by Accra and Moscow to expand their longstanding relationship.

The agreements could also support Ghana’s broader development plans, particularly its efforts to improve electricity supply, strengthen local industries and create more opportunities for its citizens.
