Haruna Iddrisu Swears In CIB Ghana Council With Cybercrime Warning

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has called for stronger action against cybercrime and other emerging threats within Ghana’s financial sector following the swearing-in of the newly constituted Council of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana (CIB Ghana).

The minister administered the oath of office to members of the Council, marking the beginning of their responsibilities in providing leadership, strategic direction and professional oversight for the institute.

The occasion also provided an opportunity to highlight the growing challenges confronting Ghana’s banking industry, particularly the increasing risks associated with cybercrime and digital financial transactions.

Addressing members of the newly inaugurated Council, Iddrisu stressed the importance of taking deliberate steps to strengthen the banking sector against criminal activities that threaten financial institutions and customers.

Cybercrime has become a major concern for financial institutions worldwide as banking operations increasingly depend on digital platforms and electronic transactions. Criminal activities targeting financial systems can undermine customer confidence, expose sensitive information and create significant financial risks.

Ghana’s banking industry is also experiencing changes driven by technological advancement, making cybersecurity an important part of financial sector development.

The minister’s call places responsibility on banking professionals and industry leaders to support measures that improve security, strengthen institutional accountability and protect customers against digital threats.

The newly sworn-in Council is expected to contribute to the professional development of bankers while promoting ethical standards and excellence within the industry.

The Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana, plays an important role in developing banking professionals through training, certification and the promotion of best practices.

With cyber threats becoming increasingly sophisticated, the need for continuous professional education and stronger collaboration among financial institutions remains important.

Iddrisu’s message therefore highlights the need for the institute to look beyond traditional banking responsibilities and pay greater attention to the challenges created by technological developments.

The swearing-in represents another important stage in the institute’s leadership, with expectations that the Council will help strengthen professionalism and contribute to a more secure and resilient financial sector.

The effectiveness of its leadership will be measured by its ability to translate these expectations into practical improvements across Ghana’s banking industry.
