Over 40% of people on dialysis in Ghana have kidney disease because of herbal medicine – Doctor

Dr. Sompa Otabil-Nelson, founder and CEO of Dinah-Gayle Medical Clinic, has raised concerns about the use of herbal medicine in Ghana, claiming that it accounts for more than 40 per cent of kidney disease cases among people receiving dialysis.

Speaking on the Toast programme on GHOne TV monitored by MyNewsGh, the US-trained Family Medicine Specialist identified herbal medicine use and high blood pressure as the two most common causes of kidney disease in Ghana.

She expressed concern about the widespread use of herbal preparations without proper guidance on their dosage or safety, noting that many people consume them without knowing how much is appropriate.

“When you look at kidney disease in Ghana, over 40% of people who are on dialysis is because of herbal medicine. It’s herbal medicine and high blood pressure. Those are the most common causes of kidney disease in Ghana,” she said.

Dr. Sompa questioned how people determine safe quantities when taking herbal preparations, explaining that many products come without clear dosage instructions or adequate monitoring.

“There’s no dosage. Just take, so do you take one handful? Do you take a spoonful? Do you take a spoon? Do you take a bowl? Do you drink? I mean, what is the struggle? How much should you take that is safe enough? And nobody’s tracking it,” she added.
