Ministry Of Education Releases BECE Timetable For 2026 Candidates
The Ministry of Education through the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the official timetable for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The timetable was released in a joint statement signed by the Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Dr. Eric Nkansah, and the Head of the Ghana National Office of WAEC, Mrs. Wendy Addy-Lamptey, on Monday, May 12, 2026. The statement was published by the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
According to the statement from the Ghana Education Service, the 2026 BECE will start on Monday, June 16, 2026, and end on Friday, June 20, 2026. The statement said over 600,000 candidates from more than 18,000 public and private Junior High Schools across Ghana will write the examination.
Speaking to Joy News in an interview in Accra, Dr. Eric Nkansah said all preparations have been completed for a successful BECE. He said WAEC has printed question papers and answer booklets and has distributed them to all Regional Education Directorates.
He explained that the first day, Monday, June 16, will start with English Language and Religious and Moral Education. Tuesday will be Science and Computing, Wednesday will be Social Studies and Creative Arts and Design, Thursday will be Mathematics and Ghanaian Language, and Friday will be French and Career Technology.
The Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr. William Amankrah Appiah, confirmed the timetable during an interview with Citi News at the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate in Kumasi. He said the Directorate has received the timetable and has distributed it to all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Education Directorates in the region.
According to Dr. Appiah, over 120,000 candidates will write the BECE in the Ashanti Region alone. He said the Regional Education Directorate has organized counselling and revision programs for candidates to prepare them well for the examination.
He warned candidates, teachers and parents against examination malpractice. In an interview with Ghana News Agency, he said WAEC and GES have put strict measures in place to prevent cheating and leakage of question papers. He said anyone caught engaging in malpractice will be punished according to the rules of WAEC.
He said, “We have met with all invigilators and supervisors in the Ashanti Region and have warned them to be vigilant and professional. We will not tolerate any form of malpractice. We want the results to reflect the true abilities of the candidates.”
The Head of WAEC Ghana, Mrs. Wendy Addy-Lamptey, in a statement reported by Graphic Online, said candidates should be at their examination centres at least 30 minutes before the start of each paper. She said candidates must come with their index numbers and all necessary materials such as pens, pencils and mathematical sets.
She also advised candidates to read instructions carefully and manage their time well during the examination. She said candidates should avoid sending foreign materials into the examination hall.
Some candidates in Kumasi have expressed readiness for the examination. Kwabena Boateng, a final year student at Asafo M/A Junior High School, told Joy News that he has been preparing well and is confident he will pass. He said his teachers have been organizing extra classes and mock examinations.
Another candidate, Akosua Frimpong, from Bantama M/A JHS, said in an interview with Ghana News Agency that she is a bit nervous but has studied hard. She said she wants to get good grades to attend her dream Senior High School, Yaa Asantewaa Girls Senior High School.
Parents have also been advised to support their children. Mr. Kofi Adjei, a parent at Asokwa, told Peace FM that parents should provide a conducive environment for their children to study at home and avoid giving them too much housework during this period.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has also called on government to provide all necessary logistics to ensure smooth conduct of the BECE. The Association, in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Mr. Thomas Musah, said teachers who will invigilate should be paid their allowances on time.
The Ministry of Education has wished all BECE candidates success in the upcoming examination and assured that government will continue to invest in basic education to improve quality.
