Ruto’s Govt Clears Air On Who’ll Be Funding For Bayern Vs Ajax Clash At Talanta Stadium, Details

The government has moved to address concerns over the cost of hosting European football giants Bayern Munich and Ajax in Kenya for the official opening of Talanta Stadium in January 2027.

Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi has assured Kenyans that taxpayers’ money will not be used to finance the arrival of the two clubs, revealing that private sponsors have committed to supporting the historic fixture.

Speaking on Saturday, October 31, Mwangi said the government had secured financial backing from sponsors to facilitate the event, dismissing concerns that public resources would be diverted to bring the European teams to Nairobi.

He also clarified that Kenya was targeting the senior teams rather than former players or club legends, following speculation that the event would feature retired football stars.

Mwangi maintained that the participation of the two established European clubs would give Kenya an opportunity to showcase its sporting infrastructure to an international audience.

He noted that Bayern Munich and Ajax command a combined global following of more than 300 million supporters, making their visit an important opportunity to promote Kenya’s image internationally.

President William Ruto announced on Wednesday, October 28, that the newly constructed Talanta Stadium would officially open on January 5, 2027, through a historic match between the German and Dutch clubs.

The President pointed out that Bayern Munich and Ajax have won the UEFA Champions League a combined ten times, underlining the significance of hosting the two sides in Nairobi.

Ruto also linked Bayern Munich’s visit to the legacy of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, noting that Raila had studied in Germany. The stadium is named Raila Odinga International Stadium.

Ajax’s renowned youth development system was also highlighted as an example of the football opportunities Kenya hopes to promote through the new facility.

The January fixture is expected to attract international attention as Kenya prepares to position Talanta Stadium as a major venue for international sporting events.
