Ruto Breaks Silence on KSh3 Billion Kenyatta Avenue Viaduct
President William Ruto has announced that the KSh3 billion Kenyatta Avenue–Upper Hill viaduct in Nairobi is more than 50 per cent complete, with construction now expected to continue towards a revised completion date of May 2027.
In an update published on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Kenyans.co.ke reported that Ruto shared the latest progress on the elevated road project through his social media accounts. The President said the approximately one-kilometre dual carriageway is intended to improve connectivity between Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) and Upper Hill.
The project is being implemented by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and is designed to ease traffic congestion along one of the capital’s busy transport corridors.
According to the report, the viaduct will provide motorists with an alternative route between the CBD and Upper Hill, a commercial district that hosts major businesses and institutions.
The latest progress update comes after the Kenya Roads Board reported in September 2026 that construction had reached 50 per cent completion, with the project scheduled for completion by May 30, 2027.
The revised timeline differs from Ruto’s earlier announcement in June, when he said the viaduct was 60 per cent complete and promised that it would open before December 2026.
KURA has previously attributed delays to the technical complexity of the structural works, particularly the installation of support columns and steel components, which require precision engineering and phased construction.
Construction began in September 2020 but was interrupted for several years amid payment disputes involving contractors. Work resumed in July 2025, according to published reports.
The viaduct is part of a wider programme of road infrastructure improvements around Nairobi, including the Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue/Ngong Road/Nyerere Road interchange and the Upper Hill–Haile Selassie overpass.
Once completed, the elevated road is expected to improve traffic flow and access to the CBD. However, the project’s benefits will depend on its completion and integration with the surrounding road network.
