Kenya Sends 53 Athletes to Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics – Salim Mvurya
Kenya is set to showcase its growing sporting talent on the international stage after qualifying 53 athletes for the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games in Senegal. Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, has announced that the national team will represent the country in 13 sporting disciplines, marking an important moment for Kenya’s sporting future.
In a press release dated November 1, 2026, Mvurya described Kenya’s participation as a moment of immense national pride, noting that the competition offers young athletes an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities against some of the world’s promising sporting talents.
According to the Cabinet Secretary, the Kenyan contingent comprises 41 female athletes, representing approximately 77 per cent of the qualified team. The significant female representation reflects the country’s continued efforts to expand opportunities for women and girls in competitive sports.
The 13 disciplines in which Kenya will participate include athletics, rugby sevens, basketball 3×3, swimming, boxing, cycling, fencing, judo, baseball5, beach handball, beach wrestling, triathlon and wushu.
Mvurya explained that the government’s participation in the games goes beyond winning medals. It is part of a long-term strategy to identify, nurture and develop young sporting talent capable of representing Kenya at major international competitions.
He further noted that the experience gained in Dakar would help prepare emerging athletes for senior national teams and future Olympic competitions, particularly the Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
The government also pledged to work closely with the National Olympic Committee of Kenya and various sports federations to strengthen athlete welfare, medical support, technical preparation and safeguarding measures.
Mvurya urged Team Kenya to demonstrate discipline, determination and sportsmanship while representing the country, adding that their performance could inspire many young Kenyans to pursue sporting careers.
Kenya’s participation in Dakar therefore presents an opportunity to showcase the country’s sporting potential while strengthening its position in Africa and the international sporting community.
