Orlando Pirates Make a Statement by Eating Chiefs-Branded Chips After Derby Win
Orlando Pirates moved to the top of the Betway Premiership table after defeating Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in an exciting Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Buccaneers secured all three points in a match that had plenty of action, mistakes and moments of excitement. The victory was important for Pirates, who are now two points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the standings, while Chiefs remain in fifth position.
Both teams started the match with a strong desire to attack, showing the usual intensity associated with the Soweto Derby. However, the quality and composure on the ball were not always there during the opening stages, with both sides struggling to make the most of their attacking opportunities.
The opening goal came after Chiefs lost possession while trying to launch an attack. Pirates quickly took advantage and launched a counter-attack, which ended with Yanela Mbuthuma finding the back of the net. His effort appeared to take a deflection before going past Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.
Amakhosi responded almost immediately, showing that they were not prepared to allow their rivals to enjoy the advantage for long. Just two minutes after conceding, Chiefs found the equaliser through Pule Mmodi.
Mfundo Vilakazi delivered a cross into the penalty area, but Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine failed to deal with it properly. Mmodi was alert and took advantage of the mistake to score from close range, making it 1-1.
Pirates struggled to produce their usual football during the first half. Chiefs pressed aggressively and forced the Buccaneers into several mistakes, particularly when they tried to play out from the back. Fernando da Cruz’s team appeared more comfortable as the half progressed, and they went into the break with reasons to be encouraged by their performance.
Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made an important change at half-time, bringing on Giamphani Lungu for Nkosikhona Ndaba. Deon Hotto, who had started in an unfamiliar right-back position, also moved to the left side.
The changes helped Pirates improve their performance, and the Buccaneers eventually regained the lead through Tshepang Moremi. Another quick counter-attack caught the Chiefs defence out of position, allowing Pirates to take advantage of their numerical superiority and score the second goal.
Chiefs tried to find another equaliser, but Pirates managed to protect their advantage. The Buccaneers had opportunities to extend their lead during the final 10 minutes, although they were wasteful in front of goal. Oswin Appollis also had an effort ruled out for offside.
When the final whistle sounded, Pirates had secured a valuable victory over their biggest rivals. The result moved them to the top of the Betway Premiership table, two points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns. Chiefs, meanwhile, remained fifth, 11 points behind the league leaders. It was also their first league defeat under Da Cruz.
The celebrations continued after the match, with Orlando Pirates players and a member of the technical team celebrating their 2-1 Soweto Derby victory by eating Kaizer Chiefs-branded chips in front of the crowd at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Photographs show the group laughing while enjoying packets of the Grilled Steak-flavoured snack, widely seen as a cheeky dig at their rivals. The win lifted the Buccaneers to the top of the Betway Premiership table. The playful celebration with Kaizer Chiefs-branded chips added to the fierce rivalry between the two Soweto giants and drew reactions from supporters.
The unusual celebration quickly became another talking point after the derby, giving supporters something else to discuss following Pirates’ victory. Beating Chiefs is always a special achievement for either side, but doing so while moving to the top of the league made the occasion even sweeter for the Buccaneers.
For Pirates, the focus will now be on maintaining their position at the top and continuing their push for the Betway Premiership title. Chiefs, on the other hand, will need to recover from the disappointment and prepare for their next challenge as they look to close the gap on the teams above them.
