Fernando Da Cruz Explains What Cost Kaizer Chiefs Against Orlando Pirates in Soweto Derby Defeat
Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz has expressed his disappointment with his team’s inability to take advantage of important opportunities during their Soweto Derby encounter against Orlando Pirates. The French tactician believes his players had enough chances to establish a comfortable lead in the opening half but failed to convert them.
Reflecting on the match, Da Cruz suggested that Chiefs should have scored two or three goals before the interval. He argued that taking advantage of their opportunities could have changed the outcome and made it much harder for Pirates to recover.
He said: “In the first half we must kill this game.
“Normally, 2 or 3-0 because the goal of Pirates, we’ve seen it’s offside and maybe there is a red card as well.
“If we score two or three goals, we’re gonna kill this game.”
His comments also showed his frustration with certain refereeing decisions during the encounter. The Chiefs coach questioned the validity of Pirates’ goal, suggesting that it should have been ruled offside. He also raised the possibility that a red card could have been issued during another incident.
However, Da Cruz did not limit his assessment to the officiating. He also acknowledged that his team’s performance changed during the second half, particularly in the closing stages when the younger players struggled to maintain the same level of control.
According to the coach, a lack of experience affected the team’s ability to manage the final 20 minutes. Instead of creating more attacking opportunities and protecting their position, Chiefs allowed Pirates to find opportunities to threaten their goal.
He explained: “In the second half, the last 20 minutes, with our young players we have a lack of experience. They don’t create chances because we have a lack of experience, we give them chances to score more goals.”
The coach’s assessment highlighted two major concerns: the failure to convert opportunities in the first half and the inability to manage the closing stages effectively.
For Kaizer Chiefs, the defeat will serve as another important lesson as they continue their Betway Premiership campaign. The technical team will need to work on improving the players’ finishing, concentration and decision-making under pressure.
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates will take encouragement from their ability to capitalise on the opportunities presented to them.
Da Cruz will now be expected to help his players learn from the disappointment and respond positively in their upcoming fixtures.
