Why Kaizer Chiefs Won’t Be Sold for R2 Billion, Says Bobby Motaung

Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung has publicly backed head coach Fernando Da Cruz and his technical team, despite the club’s uneven results this season. Motaung says the coaching staff have the experience and quality to turn things around, and he wants the club to stay patient and stick to its long-term plans instead of reacting to short-term results.

Da Cruz took over at the start of the season from the co-coaching pair of Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef. Under that duo, Chiefs reached the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup and finished in the top three of the Betway Premiership last season.

Da Cruz began his time at the club reasonably well, but the team has struggled to stay consistent in the league. Chiefs have drawn five of their last six matches and are fifth on the table with 14 points. They trail leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by nine points, although Sundowns have played one more game.

Things have also gone wrong in the cup competitions. Chiefs were knocked out of the MTN8 in the first round and then went out of the CAF Confederation Cup at the preliminary stage. These results have added pressure on the coaching staff, but Motaung says the club remains committed to the current project.

Speaking on Marawa Sports Worldwide, Motaung praised the way Da Cruz manages the dressing room and prepares the team tactically. He also credited the coach for giving young players a chance, naming Wandile Duba and Mfundo Vilakazi as examples. Motaung admitted that injuries have hurt the team and said the return of those players should bring more stability. He added that the Premier Soccer League is a tough competition and that coaches need to understand its particular demands.

Motaung also said the club has the facilities and support staff to help the technical team succeed, including sports science resources and the work done by coaches behind the scenes. He stressed that building a strong side takes careful planning and steady effort, and that young South African players must be developed to compete at the top level of African football. In his view, they need good technical skills, discipline and an understanding of what continental competition demands.

Separately, Chiefs have reportedly turned down a R2 billion offer from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund to buy the club. Motaung is quoted as saying that Kaizer Chiefs is a Motaung legacy and that no amount of money would make the family sell. The bid has not been independently confirmed, so it should be treated with caution. If true, it points to growing international interest in South African football, while the club’s ownership would stay as it is.

For supporters, better results remain the main concern. Chiefs will need to turn their draws into wins if they want to close the gap on the leaders. Motaung, however, has asked for patience and believes Da Cruz is a high-level coach who needs time and trust to put his ideas into practice.
