Catholic Bishop in Kenya Says Selfishness, Injustice Fuel Economic Hardships

The Kenyan Catholic Church leader emphasized the role of education in addressing poverty, noting that the problem often persists when parents are unable to send their children to school.

“When there is a lack of education, people remain in ignorance, and in ignorance they cannot accomplish much; they cannot be innovative. Therefore, education helps to fight poverty,” he noted.

Bishop Oseso also highlighted inadequate health and medical services as another factor that contributes to poverty, noting that individuals who are unwell are often unable to work or participate fully in economic activities.

“A sick person who is lying in hospital or at home cannot contribute to improving the world,” he said, stressing that good health is essential for productive work and economic growth.

The Kenyan Catholic Church leader who has been at the helm of Nakuru Diocese since his Episcopal Consecration in May 2023 cautioned against laziness, describing it as a major obstacle to progress.

“When you are lazy, you are inviting poverty; you are not using the gift God has given you. God has given us intelligence so that we may use it to improve our lives and benefit others,” he stated.

He called upon the young students at the Archbishop Ndingi School and across Kenya to resist the temptation to follow easy paths, saying, “You must be ready to work hard. You must be willing to wake up early and make sacrifices in order to achieve your goals. Success is not easy.”

Bishop Oseso urged young people to shift their mindset from seeking employment to creating opportunities through innovation and initiative after acquiring academic qualifications.

“In the past people went to school mainly to find jobs, but today education should prepare you to become job creators. What you learn should help you become innovative and contribute something meaningful to society,” he said.

In his March 5 homily, the Local Ordinary of Nakuru also reflected on the Biblical parable of the rich man and Lazarus, describing it as a powerful reminder of the Christian responsibility to care for others and prepare for eternal life.
