Soweto Derby: Pirates and Chiefs Confirm Starting Line-Ups for FNB Stadium Showdown

Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed their starting line-ups for Saturday afternoon’s highly anticipated Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium, with both teams determined to claim bragging rights in the latest chapter of South African football’s biggest rivalry.

The Betway Premiership encounter carries significant importance for both sides, with the Buccaneers looking to strengthen their title challenge while Amakhosi aim to produce a statement performance against their arch-rivals.

Pirates, who come into the contest as the defending league champions, have selected a strong starting XI under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. Sipho Chaine gets the nod between the posts, while Nkosinathi Sibisi captains the side.

The Buccaneers’ defensive department includes Deon Hotto, Lebone Seema, Sibisi and Nkosikhona Ndaba. In midfield, Thalente Mbatha, Thapelo Mokobodi and Sihle Selepe are named in the starting line-up, while Tshepang Moremi, Simphiwe Masilela and Yamela Mbuthuma provide the attacking options.

Pirates will be hoping their attacking players can make the difference against a Chiefs defence that will be under pressure to remain organised throughout the encounter.

Meanwhile, Fernando da Cruz has also settled on his starting XI for the Glamour Boys, with Brandon Petersen captaining the team from goal.

The biggest talking point in the Chiefs selection is the return of Inacio Miguel to the starting line-up. The defender replaces Rushwin Dortley in central defence, with the club confirming that it is the only change from the team that started against TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup.

Miguel partners Thabo Moloisane in the heart of defence, while Paseka Mako and Reeve Frosler occupy the full-back positions.

Sibongiseni Mthethwa anchors the midfield, supported by Lebohang Maboe and Mduduzi Shabalala. In attack, Pule Mmodi and Mfundo Vilakazi provide the width, with Wandile Duba leading the line.

Duba enters the derby after an impressive midweek performance in which he scored a hat-trick against TS Galaxy. His inclusion gives Chiefs an attacking option who will be eager to carry that confidence into a much bigger occasion.

Both teams enjoyed convincing victories in the Carling Knockout Cup during the week, with Pirates defeating Milford FC 3-0 and Chiefs recording an identical scoreline against TS Galaxy. Those results should provide confidence, although the Soweto Derby presents an entirely different challenge.

The fixture is also the 186th official meeting between the two historic rivals. According to Kaizer Chiefs, Amakhosi have won 75 of the previous encounters, compared with 50 victories for Pirates, while 55 matches have ended in draws.

With history, pride and valuable league points at stake, both coaches will be hoping their selected players deliver when it matters most.
