Malema says he knows names of people who infiltrated EFF after SSA claims

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) president Julius Malema has told supporters he knows the names of people who were paid to infiltrate the party. He spoke at the Tshela Thupa rally at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Saturday, just days before the local government elections.

Malema was responding to court revelations that the State Security Agency (SSA) spent R12 million on a project called Project Mayibuye. The money was used to spy on the EFF and the Fees Must Fall movement. The details came out in a theft and fraud case against former SSA members Patrick Mshothola and Thulani Dlomo in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. The EFF was given limited access to parts of the trial transcript this week.

Malema said he received a list of the infiltrators three days earlier. “I have that list with me. I know their names, I know their surnames, I know the positions they used to hold in the EFF and I know the positions they hold in the EFF,” he told the crowd. He added that he has locked the list in a safe and will not release it. “They themselves must speak to their God and reveal themselves. It is not my business to destroy the careers of individuals.”

He said the revelations confirmed long-held suspicions. The EFF has challenged what he called the “capitalist establishment”, corruption and state failure. Malema reminded supporters of the party’s role in the Nkandla matter. While others wanted to bury the issue, the EFF demanded that former president Jacob Zuma pay back the money and took the case all the way to the Constitutional Court.

He also spoke about Fees Must Fall. EFF members were in lecture halls, on the streets and in holding cells. “Today, the poor children of this country study for free because the EFF and the students refused to accept that education is a privilege for the rich,” Malema said.

According to the court evidence, the operation was meant to divide the EFF, weaken it and pull members back to the African National Congress (ANC). Former state security minister David Mahlobo is alleged to have instructed the payment of the R12 million. Malema said the spies failed. “We defeated them. The EFF remains intact.”

He argued that the attempt to infiltrate the party shows its strength. “Why would the State Security Agency deploy its agents and spend millions of rands to infiltrate and destroy a non-entity?” he asked. Malema said the EFF still represents hope for people who have been told for too long that they do not deserve better.
