Orlando Pirates Beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 to End Their Unbeaten League Run

Orlando Pirates claimed a memorable victory over their biggest rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, after securing a 2-1 win in the first Soweto Derby of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season on Saturday afternoon.

The highly anticipated encounter delivered another exciting chapter in one of South African football’s biggest rivalries, with Pirates emerging victorious to take the bragging rights and bring Chiefs’ unbeaten start to the league campaign to an end.

The result represents a significant setback for Kaizer Chiefs, who had entered the derby hoping to maintain their impressive run and extend their unbeaten record. However, they were unable to overcome a determined Pirates side that showed greater effectiveness in a closely contested encounter.

The match began with Kaizer Chiefs looking dangerous in the opening stages, but Orlando Pirates gradually grew into the contest and broke the deadlock in the 24th minute through Yanela Mbuthuma. His effort took a deflection off a Chiefs defender before beating goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

Chiefs responded six minutes later when Pule Mmodi capitalised on a goalkeeping mistake by Sipho Chaine to restore parity, sending both teams into the half-time break level at 1-1.

However, Pirates regained the advantage ten minutes into the second half. Thapelo Mokobodi produced an excellent attacking move before setting up Tshepang Moremi, who calmly finished in the 55th minute to make it 2-1.

Chiefs attempted to find another equaliser but struggled to break through the Pirates defence. Their chances of rescuing a point suffered another blow in stoppage time when Inacio Miguel received a second yellow card and was sent off.

Pirates eventually held on to secure all three points, extending their impressive league-winning run to seven consecutive matches.

The victory also moved Orlando Pirates to the top of the Betway Premiership standings with 25 points from nine matches, two points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, who had a game in hand.

For Kaizer Chiefs, the defeat ended their unbeaten league record and left them fifth with 14 points.

The result gives Pirates an important advantage in the title race while providing their supporters with another memorable victory over their fiercest rivals.
