From Raila to Matiang’i and Now Sifuna: Richard Onyonka’s Changing Political Loyalties

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has once again attracted attention inKenya’s political scene following his latest move to join Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi political movement. Onyonka’s political journey has been marked by several changes in political alliances, raising questions about his loyalty and long-term political ambitions as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.

According to a report published by the Daily Nation on Friday, October 30, 2026, Onyonka has been appointed as the proposed National Treasurer of the Linda Mwananchi Party, marking a significant shift from his previous close association with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

He later became the first Member of Parliament for Kitutu Chache South, a position he held for several years before being elected Kisii Senator.

More recently, Onyonka emerged as one of the strongest supporters of Matiang’i’s presidential ambitions. He travelled across the Gusii region, encouraging residents to support the former Cabinet Secretary’s 2027 presidential bid.

However, his growing association with Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement has changed the political conversation.

Onyonka has openly praised Sifuna, describing him as a leader capable of becoming Kenya’s next president. He has also attended several rallies alongside the Nairobi Senator.

Onyonka previously defended his position, arguing that supporting Sifuna did not mean abandoning Matiang’i because both belonged to the opposition.

His proposed appointment as National Treasurer now places him among the key figures in Sifuna’s political organisation. The position is expected to be considered during the party’s National Delegates Convention scheduled for November 13, 2026.

As opposition politics continue to take shape ahead of 2027, Onyonka’s next political moves will remain a subject of interest.
