Murkomen Announces Plans for Man U vs Arsenal Match in Kenya

Kenya could witness another major international football spectacle in 2027, with Manchester United and Arsenal being lined up for a possible showdown in Nairobi following the planned Bayern Munich-Ajax encounter.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen made the announcement on Friday, October 30, while addressing residents in Makutano, Marakwet West, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

He indicated that the two English Premier League rivals could meet at the newly constructed Raila Odinga International Stadium around June or July 2027, shortly after the current Premier League season concludes.

Murkomen presented the proposed fixture as part of a wider plan to attract more international sporting events to Kenya, pointing to the government’s investment in sports facilities and opportunities for young people.

The CS also referred to the scheduled January 5, 2027, match between German champions Bayern Munich and Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam. The encounter is expected to mark the opening of the 60,000-seater stadium at Talanta Sports City in Nairobi.

Speaking about the planned football events, Murkomen said the Bayern-Ajax fixture would not be the last major international match hosted at the facility.

“When the current Premier League season ends, around June or July, Manchester United will play Arsenal in Nairobi. My police officers will have a very difficult task because locals here will trek to Nairobi,” he stated.

His remarks have raised expectations among Kenyan football supporters, particularly those who follow the two English clubs, which have a long-standing rivalry in the Premier League.

However, Murkomen’s announcement was presented as a proposed future fixture, and further details, including the exact date, ticket arrangements and confirmation from the clubs, were not provided in his remarks.

The stadium is expected to play a central role in Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which the country will co-host with Tanzania and Uganda.

The continental tournament is scheduled to run from June 19 to July 17, 2027, making the proposed Manchester United-Arsenal encounter a potentially significant addition to Kenya’s sporting calendar.
