Eugene Zwane Names Five Pirates And Chiefs Stars Who Could Decide Soweto Derby
Orlando Pirates legend Eugene Zwane has highlighted several players he believes could have a major influence on Saturday’s Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs, pointing to attacking talent and defensive strength as possible deciding factors.
The Betway Premiership rivals will meet at FNB Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 15:30 CAT. The fixture has attracted enormous interest, with tickets selling out on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, the same day they went on sale.
Both sides approach the encounter with impressive unbeaten runs. Pirates, coached by Abdeslam Ouaddou, have avoided defeat in their last eight league matches, while Chiefs have also gone eight league outings without losing.
Speaking exclusively to FARPost, Zwane first discussed the players who could cause problems for Pirates in the Chiefs team. He singled out Wandile Duba, whose recent performance against TS Galaxy has placed him firmly in the spotlight.
Duba scored a hat-trick during the week in the Carling Knockout Cup, giving Zwane reason to regard him as one of the players Pirates must watch closely.
The former Buccaneers figure also identified Mduduzi Shabalala, praising the midfielder’s technique, passing ability and finishing in the penalty area. Although he believes Shabalala has not always delivered consistently, Zwane warned that his attacking quality makes him a threat.
His third Chiefs selection was Lebohang Maboe. Zwane acknowledged that the experienced midfielder has not yet returned to his best since recovering from injury, but noted that his fitness is improving with every appearance. He believes Maboe could trouble Pirates if he reaches peak sharpness.
Zwane also named four players from his former club who could shape the contest. In attack, he selected Tshepang Moremi and Oswin Appollis, describing both as proven performers capable of scoring goals, creating chances and providing assists.
At the other end of the pitch, he identified Lebone Seema as an important figure in the heart of Pirates’ defence and goalkeeper Sipho Chaine as another player whose contribution could prove decisive.
With both teams carrying unbeaten league runs into a sold-out stadium, the players identified by Zwane will be among those attracting attention when the Soweto rivals meet.
