Andrea Johnson Arrested: Former IDAC Boss Set for Pretoria Court Appearance

Former Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Advocate Andrea Johnson has been arrested and is facing charges relating to defeating and obstructing the ends of justice. The development marks a significant moment in South Africa’s ongoing efforts to investigate allegations involving senior figures within the criminal justice system.

Johnson was arrested on Friday, 30 October 2026, and is expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court. Her arrest comes after months of scrutiny surrounding allegations raised during proceedings at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

The case has attracted considerable public attention because of Johnson’s former position within the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), where she headed IDAC, an institution established to investigate serious corruption-related offences.

The allegations reportedly relate to a 2018 assault and intimidation complaint involving former Crime Intelligence Major-General Feroz Khan and a fellow police officer, Brigadier Leonora Phetlhe.

Evidence presented during the Madlanga Commission raised questions about the handling of the case and whether confidential information from the investigation had allegedly been shared improperly.

Witnesses told the commission that information from the police docket may have been disclosed to Khan before he provided a warning statement to investigators. The allegations have placed the conduct of individuals involved in the investigation under renewed scrutiny.

Johnson has previously faced questions about her handling of the matter during the commission’s proceedings. However, the allegations have yet to be fully tested in a criminal court.

Khan has also come under scrutiny over his conduct during his time in the South African Police Service (SAPS). He was dismissed from the police service in September after failing to attend an expedited disciplinary process.

The arrests have renewed discussions about accountability within South Africa’s law enforcement and prosecutorial institutions.

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development has stressed that nobody should be above the law, regardless of their former position or influence within the criminal justice system.

Committee chairperson Xola Nqola said allegations involving individuals entrusted with upholding the law make it particularly important for investigative and judicial institutions to operate independently.

The committee has also emphasised that the accused remain entitled to the presumption of innocence.

As Johnson prepares to appear in court, further proceedings are expected to provide clarity on the charges, the prosecution’s position and the next steps in the case.

The matter remains a developing story, with South Africans watching closely as the criminal justice system addresses allegations involving former senior officials.
