ActionSA Has Publicly Declared Their Support For March n March Movement

ActionSA has announced plans to mobilise its members and supporters to attend proceedings at the Durban High Court in solidarity with the March and March Movement amid an ongoing legal dispute involving the Minister of Police.

The party says it intends to turn out in large numbers at the court to demonstrate its support for the movement, which is facing a legal challenge over its planned protest activities in parts of Durban.

The dispute centres on an application by the Minister of Police seeking a court order to prevent March and March from conducting demonstrations in certain areas of the city.

ActionSA’s decision to stand alongside the movement signals its opposition to the proposed restrictions, which it views as an attempt to limit the group’s ability to exercise its constitutional right to peaceful protest.

The case has brought renewed attention to the balance between maintaining public order and protecting citizens’ freedom to assemble and demonstrate.

Section 17 of the South African Constitution guarantees everyone the right to assemble, demonstrate, picket and present petitions peacefully and unarmed.

However, the exercise of this right is also subject to laws and regulations intended to protect public safety, property and order. Any restrictions imposed by authorities must comply with constitutional requirements.

The Durban High Court will therefore have to consider the legal arguments surrounding the proposed restrictions and the circumstances of the Minister’s application.

For March and March, the proceedings could determine its ability to organise demonstrations in the affected parts of Durban. ActionSA’s planned mobilisation adds political weight to the dispute, as the party publicly backs the movement’s position.

Attention will now turn to the court proceedings and the arguments presented by the parties, with the outcome potentially carrying wider significance for protest movements and the regulation of public demonstrations in South Africa.
