Cost and Efficiency Shift: Why Equity Bank Streamlined M-Pesa Paybill Transaction Notifications
Equity Bank Kenya has clarified the operational reasons behind the transition away from sending automatic SMS confirmation alerts for incoming M-Pesa Paybill (247247) transactions.
The shift reflects a strategic digital migration aimed at reducing SMS communication overheads, curbing telecommunication spam, and encouraging account holders to monitor transactions via secure, real-time digital channels such as the Equity Mobile App and the USSD menu.
Bank representatives noted that as digital transactions scale across millions of daily account top-ups, shifting notifications to in-app receipts and instant mobile statements provides a more sustainable, secure, and organized system for users.
Addressing customer inquiries regarding missing text alerts after transferring funds via Paybill, Equity Bank explained that Safaricom’s standard M-Pesa transaction SMS continues to serve as official proof of payment.
Because Paybill 247247 operates as an aggregator system where the M-Pesa confirmation confirms successful deposit into Equity’s settlement accounts, sending a duplicate bank-side SMS for every micro-transaction created unnecessary network congestion and redundant costs.
The bank assured customers that funds deposited via Paybill are credited to destination accounts instantly, regardless of whether a secondary SMS is generated by the bank.
To ensure real-time visibility over balances and pending settlements, Equity Bank encourages customers to enable push notifications on the Equity Mobile app or generate instant e-statements.
Account holders experiencing delays in balance updates are advised to verify their account references or present their M-Pesa transaction codes to customer support for rapid tracing.
As financial institutions across the region digitize core customer service touchpoints, Equity’s notification model highlights the broader industry shift toward app-centric banking ecosystems.
