NPA BOMBSHELL! R99 Million in Assets Linked to Taxi Boss Joe Sibanyoni Frozen, Luxury Cars Targeted

MPUMALANGA, SOUTH AFRICA — 29 OCTOBER 2026

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has secured a provisional restraint order over assets valued at approximately R99 million linked to Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni and four other individuals allegedly connected to organised criminal activities, including extortion.

The order targets an extensive collection of luxury vehicles, residential properties and financial investments as authorities intensify efforts to deprive suspected criminal networks of assets allegedly acquired through unlawful activities.

The NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU), working alongside the Organised Crime Unit and the police, obtained the order from the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in Middelburg on 28 September 2026.

According to the information provided by the NPA, the provisional restraint order was granted under Section 26 of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act 121 of 1998.

Ferraris, Porsche and luxury properties targeted

The assets covered by the order include movable and immovable property estimated to be worth R99 million.

Among the properties identified are homes and other real estate in Centurion and Pretoria, including properties situated in exclusive golf estates in Centurion.

The restrained luxury vehicles reportedly include Ferraris, a Porsche, Lexus models, Mercedes-Benz vehicles and BMWs.

The scale and value of the assets highlight the financial focus of the proceedings, which seek to prevent property allegedly linked to criminal activity from being sold, transferred or otherwise dealt with while the legal process continues.

NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the restraint order was obtained on the basis that the assets allegedly represented benefits derived from criminal activities.

The order also requires the affected individuals to surrender specified bank accounts and investments to a court-appointed curator, who will oversee the assets in accordance with the court’s directions.

Five individuals named in the proceedings

Besides Sibanyoni, the individuals named in the matter are Philemon Makhaya Msiza, Mvimbi Daniel Masilela, Oupa Sindane and Rose Sibanyoni.

The proceedings form part of the authorities’ broader efforts to disrupt organised crime by targeting the financial resources and property allegedly connected to unlawful operations.

Asset restraint proceedings are an important tool in South Africa’s criminal justice system because they can preserve property while authorities pursue the legal requirements for possible forfeiture.

However, a provisional restraint order does not, by itself, amount to a final forfeiture of the assets or establish that the individuals concerned are guilty of the alleged offences.

The affected parties’ assets will remain subject to the court order and the applicable legal process. Any final decision on forfeiture will depend on the proceedings and the evidence presented before the court.

The NPA maintains that asset forfeiture measures are intended to ensure that crime does not pay by removing the financial benefits allegedly generated through criminal conduct.

The case places a spotlight on the authorities’ continuing efforts to tackle organised criminal activity in Mpumalanga and beyond, with the R99 million restraint order representing a significant financial intervention in the matter.
