Moses Kuria Issues Fresh Warning to Gachagua Over Kalonzo as 2027 Political Battle Intensifies

Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has warned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to exercise caution in his political dealings with Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka as opposition leaders prepare for the 2027 General Election.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Kuria questioned Gachagua’s decision to publicly commit himself to Kalonzo, citing his experience in political negotiations that led to the formation of the Jubilee Alliance in 2012.

Kuria argued that Kenya’s political history offers important lessons for leaders entering alliances, warning Gachagua against making firm commitments before understanding the interests and ambitions of the people involved.

He recalled his participation in negotiations that shaped the Jubilee political arrangement ahead of the 2013 General Election, suggesting that political agreements can become complicated when leaders have competing ambitions.

“If I were Rigathi Gachagua, I would be careful before swearing with the Bible on behalf of Kalonzo Musyoka,” Kuria stated.

The former Cabinet Secretary’s remarks come at a time when opposition leaders are holding consultations aimed at building a united political front capable of challenging President William Ruto in the next election.

Kalonzo and Gachagua have recently strengthened their relationship through meetings and public statements defending their political partnership.

Both leaders have presented opposition unity as an important step towards challenging the current administration.

However, questions remain over who will eventually receive the opposition’s presidential ticket, with several political figures positioning themselves ahead of the election.

Kuria’s warning highlights the difficulties opposition leaders could face as they attempt to balance personal ambitions, party interests and regional political considerations.

The remarks also bring renewed attention to the history of political alliances in Kenya, where partnerships formed before elections have sometimes been tested by disagreements over leadership and the distribution of political positions.

With the 2027 contest approaching, opposition leaders face the challenge of developing a common strategy while maintaining trust among their respective political camps.

Whether Gachagua and Kalonzo can sustain their partnership amid growing political competition remains to be seen.

Kuria’s intervention adds another voice to the debate over the opposition’s leadership arrangements and the risks of making political commitments too early.
