Nairobi: A Woman Is Crushed to Death at a Bus Stage While Waiting for a Matatu to Go to Work
A family in Nairobi has been thrown into grief after a woman was hit and killed by a private car while standing at a roadside for public transport along Ngong Road on her way to work in the Central Business District.
The deadly crash happened at Kenol Stage near Raila Odinga Stadium at about 7:25 am on Thursday, October 29, taking three lives and leaving several others hurt.According to witnesses, the dark blue private car was speeding from the Ngong side when the driver lost control.
The car allegedly crashed onto the sidewalk before veering off the road and striking the woman, who was waiting for a matatu to the city centre.
Moments after the impact, the vehicle erupted in flames, sparking panic among pedestrians and motorists who saw the incident.
Bystanders hurried to the scene to assist the victims as events unfolded.
The woman was one of three people said to have died in the crash, while several others suffered injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment.Photos shared online showed the car’s wreckage badly mangled and consumed by fire, underscoring how severe the accident was.
Witnesses also alleged that two bottles of liquor were found in the wreckage, raising questions over whether the driver had been drinking before the crash.
Still, it had not been confirmed whether alcohol played a role. The precise cause of the collision remained uncertain, as the authorities had yet to establish what led the driver to lose control.
The tragedy has revived worries about road safety in Nairobi, where commuters routinely stand beside busy roads waiting for transport, particularly during the morning rush.
It also follows just four days after a fatal crash between a bus and a lorry on the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway, which reportedly killed at least 22 people.
The latest accident points to the ongoing perils facing road users and the need for cautious driving to prevent more deaths and injuries on Kenyan roads.
