Tutam: Chipukeezy praises Ruto, says Bayern Munich vs Ajax match will boost Kenya’s tourism
Comedian and media personality Chipukeezy has defended the planned Bayern Munich vs Ajax exhibition match in Nairobi, arguing that the event could benefit Kenya beyond the football action.
Chipukeezy said the match, scheduled for January 5, 2027, at Raila Odinga International Stadium, would give Kenya international exposure, support tourism and hospitality businesses, and provide an opportunity to assess the country’s facilities for hosting major sporting events.
In a statement reacting to the planned fixture, Chipukeezy explained that international clubs regularly travel abroad for commercial and training purposes, adding that Kenya could gain from hosting the two European sides.
“Big clubs do world tours every pre-season for commercial and training reasons. It’s good exposure for Kenya – tourism, hotels, and a test for our facilities for future hosting. It’s bigger than just the 90 minutes,” he said on Thursday, October 29,2026.
The media personality also appeared to take aim at critics questioning the value of the fixture, urging them to consider the wider benefits of bringing internationally recognised clubs to Kenya.
“Watu wa zero football knowledge, Myamaze, please Na Ni Tutam,” he added.
His remarks come as the planned match draws attention to Kenya’s preparations to host major sporting events and the potential economic opportunities associated with international football.
The fixture is expected to attract football fans interested in watching two prominent European clubs play on Kenyan soil. Beyond ticket sales, such an event could create demand for accommodation, transport, food services and other businesses that serve visitors.
President William Ruto announced that Bayern Munich and Ajax would face each other at Raila Odinga International Stadium on January 5, 2027, as part of activities marking the facility’s official opening.
The announcement has generated discussion among Kenyans, with some welcoming the prospect of watching international football locally while others question the cost and wider value of hosting such a match.
Chipukeezy’s comments add to the debate by highlighting the possible benefits outside the stadium, including tourism promotion and testing Kenya’s capacity to host high-profile sporting occasions.
However, the scale of the economic impact will depend on factors such as attendance, visitor spending and the costs associated with organising the event.
For Chipukeezy, the fixture should therefore be viewed as more than a 90-minute contest, with its potential value extending to Kenya’s tourism industry and ambitions to host more international sporting events.
