Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi has highlighted the potential of smart cities in transforming Kenya’s urban development after accompanying President William Ruto on a tour of a major housing and infrastructure project outside Moscow, Russia. The visit took place on Thursday, when the Kenyan delegation toured a 1,140-acre development spearheaded by Sberbank Group, one of Russia’s largest financial institutions.

The project showcases a modern approach to urban planning, combining residential housing, commercial facilities, public services and environmentally sustainable infrastructure within one development.

According to Mudavadi, the project features approximately 65,000 housing units, thousands of office spaces, a hospital, schools and modern waste management facilities.

The development also incorporates technology and environmentally conscious infrastructure aimed at improving how residents live, access essential services.

In a statement following the tour, Mudavadi said the experience provided valuable lessons for Kenya as the government pursues its urban development agenda.

He noted that the country needed to focus on creating cities that offer more than expanding residential and commercial spaces, arguing that modern urban centres should also be environmentally friendly, efficient and comfortable for residents.Mudavadi added that Kenya could draw useful insights from the Russian project as it works to expand affordable housing, improve infrastructure and strengthen the delivery of public services.

He further observed that well-planned urban developments could create employment opportunities and open new economic prospects, particularly for young people.

The visit comes as the government continues to pursue housing and infrastructure initiatives intended to address urbanisation and improve living conditions across the country.

Mudavadi said Kenya’s ambition should be to develop smart, green and liveable cities that improve the quality of life for citizens.
