Gachagua Reveals Why Winnie Odinga & Raila Junior Might Lose Nairobi Seats In 2027 Elections
Democracy for citizens party leader Rigathi Gachagua has warned Winnie Odinga and Raila Junior that their choice of political party could determine their chances of winning elective seats in Nairobi during the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua welcomed the entry of the two siblings into Nairobi politics but argued that they could struggle to secure victory if they contested on Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) tickets.
Speaking to KTN News on Wednesday, October 28, the former deputy president said Raila Junior had a chance of winning the Kibra parliamentary seat but would face difficulties if he remained under ODM.
“I heard the son of Raila Odinga, Raila Junior, that he is running. He stands a good chance, but if he comes with ODM, he will lose. That is for sure,” Gachagua said.
He also advised Winnie to consider alternative political formations, including the Linda Mwananchi Movement or Wiper Patriotic Front, if she hopes to win the Nairobi senatorial seat.
“Winnie also has a chance if she comes with Linda Mwananchi or Wiper, but if she comes with ODM, she will go nowhere,” he added.
Winnie is seeking to succeed Edwin Sifuna as Nairobi senator, while Raila Junior is eyeing the Kibra parliamentary seat currently held by Mwalimu Peter Orero.
Their political choices could shape the competition within opposition ranks, particularly as different formations position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gachagua, who leads DCP, maintained that Nairobi remains strongly opposed to President William Ruto’s administration, arguing that candidates associated with the government would struggle to attract sufficient support in the county.
The former deputy president also revealed that his political camp was considering a different strategy for Nairobi, potentially allowing candidates allied to the opposition to compete against one another instead of negotiating joint tickets.
He argued that the opposition’s perceived strength in the capital reduced the need for political parties to agree on a single candidate for every seat.
The debate over nominations has already emerged in the Nairobi gubernatorial race, where DCP aspirant James Gakuya, popularly known as Bazenga, has ruled out a negotiated arrangement with Babu Owino, who is pursuing the seat on The Mwananchi Party ticket.
Gakuya has maintained that he intends to remain in the contest, even if DCP decides to support another candidate, leaving open the possibility of running as an independent.
As the 2027 elections approach, party affiliations, coalition negotiations and competition among opposition candidates are expected to play a major role in determining Nairobi’s political direction.
