Video of Rachel Ruto Checking Daughter Nadia’s Tea in Moscow Wins Online Praise

First Lady Rachel Ruto has drawn praise online after a brief moment with her daughter, Nadia Cherono, during the family’s visit to Moscow.

According to a Tuko post, a video from the trip shows Mrs Ruto checking on Nadia’s tea. The outlet said the simple act reminded many Kenyans of their own mothers. I could not find the full video or any other report on it, so the details come from Tuko’s description alone.

The moment happened during President William Ruto’s visit to Russia. He addressed the Russia-Kenya Business Roundtable Forum in Moscow on Wednesday, urging Russian investors to put more money into Kenya. He pointed to the country’s economic growth, large domestic market and position as a gateway to East and Central Africa.

The Kenyan delegation includes Mrs Ruto, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui and Kenya’s Ambassador to Russia, Peter Mathuki.

Nadia has been in the public eye since 2015. That year, then Deputy President William Ruto announced that he had adopted her. He made the announcement after meeting her at the launch of a sustainability fund for the Madre Ippolita Children’s Home in Machakos County. She had been abandoned as a newborn and was being cared for by the sisters at the home.

Ruto said he named her Cherono after his mother and made her part of his family. The couple’s children are listed as Charlene, Nick, June, Abby Cherop, Nadia Cherono and Stephanie Jepchumba.

Nadia has often appeared with her parents at official events. Years ago, she was photographed holding her father’s hand as they walked into State House in Kampala for a meeting with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

The latest clip has also drawn attention to the First Lady’s travel schedule. Mrs Ruto has joined her husband on several foreign trips this year. She was part of the delegation during his European tour in June. In September, she travelled to Morocco on a working visit, where Princess Lalla Asmaa welcomed her at Rabat-Salé Airport.
