FEC Approves Digital Postcode System for Nigeria

The Federal Executive Council has approved the implementation of a Geographic Information System-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system for Nigeria.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed this on Wednesday in a post on his X handle.

According to the minister, the approval was granted by the Federal Executive Council under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.

Tijani said the new system would be implemented as part of efforts to deliver on the targets and priorities outlined in the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy’s Strategic Blueprint.

“I am pleased to announce that the Federal Executive Council under the leadership of H.E. President @officialABAT, GCFR, has today approved the implementation of a GIS-enabled Alphanumeric Digital Postcode System for Nigeria,” he wrote.

He said the ministry would work in collaboration with the Postmaster General of the Federation, Tola Odeyemi, and her team at the Nigerian Postal Service to introduce a modern, geospatial intelligent addressing system.

“With @PMG_NIPOST Tola Odeyemi and her team at @NipostNgn, who worked hard on delivering this, we will introduce a modern, geospatial intelligent addressing system that improves accuracy across the country and enables faster and more reliable mail and parcel processing,” Tijani stated.

The minister added that beyond strengthening postal operations, the Digital Postcode System would serve as a national enabler for improved planning and service delivery.

“Beyond strengthening postal operations, the Digital Postcode System will also serve as an important national enabler supporting better national planning, improved emergency response, more efficient logistics and e-commerce, and the delivery of government services,” he wrote.

He noted that as Nigeria’s digital economy expands, foundational systems such as a digital postcode framework are essential for building infrastructure that connects people, businesses, and services more efficiently.

“This approval represents another step forward in our commitment to building the enabling environment to support a modern, inclusive, and globally competitive digital economy,” the minister added.

PUCNH Online reports that GIS-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system is a modern addressing framework that assigns unique combinations of letters and numbers codes to precise geographic locations across Nigeria.

Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital economy has long been constrained by inadequate addressing systems.

Many locations lack formal street names or numbers, creating challenges for deliveries, security, navigation, and service access.

The new system builds on earlier groundwork, including geospatial data from the National Population Commission’s census mapping efforts and prior NIPOST collaborations dating back several years.

Wednesday’s FEC decision advances those efforts into full implementation.
