Kipindiree: Nuru Okanga unhappy with Ruto’s Bayern Munich and Ajax match announcement
Social media personality Nuru Okanga has dismissed President William Ruto’s announcement that German football giants FC Bayern Munich and Dutch side AFC Ajax will play a friendly match in Nairobi, saying the news could have been shared through a simple WhatsApp status.
Okanga reacted on Wednesday, October 28, after Ruto announced that the two European clubs would face each other on January 5, 2027, to officially open the new Raila Odinga International Stadium, formerly known as Talanta Stadium, along Ngong Road in Nairobi.
The announcement followed an earlier communication from State House indicating that the President would make a major announcement at 6 pm, prompting speculation on social media about what he intended to reveal.
However, after the announcement centred on the high-profile football fixture, Okanga suggested that the news did not warrant the anticipation that had surrounded it.
“I told you ni Kipindiree, hiyo ni kitu angetuma tu kwa WhatsApp status,” he wrote.
In his reaction, Okanga also directed his followers’ attention to Rigathi Gachagua ahead of an anticipated television interview scheduled for 7:30 pm.
“Let’s wait for Wamunyoro at 7:30 PM!” Okanga wrote.
Before Ruto revealed the fixture, Okanga had offered his own prediction about the subject of the President’s address, suggesting that some Kenyans were expecting a much bigger political development.
In an earlier post, the social media personality joked that Kenyans were waiting for Ruto to announce his resignation. He then shared his own view that the announcement would most likely concern the renaming of Talanta Stadium after the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Okanga argued that naming the facility after Raila would not amount to a major announcement because Kenyans had already called for the stadium to honour the former opposition leader.
“Kenyan Are Saying Ruto’s Big Announcement Today Must Be About His Resignation! 🤣🤣 I think it’s about renaming Talanta Stadium after Raila Odinga, but that’s not a major announcement. We Kenyans asked for Talanta Stadium to be named after Baba, so hakuna kitu kubwa hapo!” he wrote.
Ruto subsequently announced that the facility would be officially opened as the Raila Odinga International Stadium, with Bayern Munich and Ajax scheduled to headline the inaugural match on January 5, 2027.
The 60,000-seater venue is among Kenya’s major sporting infrastructure projects and is expected to play a role in the country’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
Ruto announced that Bayern Munich and Ajax would play the inaugural match at the new stadium on January 5, 2027. The facility, located at Talanta Sports City along Ngong Road, has a planned capacity of 60,000 spectators.
The venue includes a hybrid playing surface, 52 hospitality skyboxes, and provisions for video assistant refereeing (VAR) and goal-line technology. It is intended to support Kenya’s ambitions to host major international sporting events, including matches during AFCON 2027.
The fixture will bring two prominent European clubs to Nairobi for the opening of the stadium, although Okanga’s response focused on the scale of the announcement rather than the sporting significance of the match.
For the social media personality, the key issue was the build-up to Ruto’s announcement and whether the revelation matched the expectations created before the address.
