Orlando Pirates Send Warning Before Soweto Derby With Convincing Cup Victory
With Tuesday’s 3-0 thrashing of Milford FC in the Round of 16 match at the Orlando Amstel Arena, Orlando Pirates moved one step closer to defending their Carling Knockout title.
Thanks to goals from Thapelo Mokobodi and Tshepang Moremi—who scored twice—the Buccaneers were able to secure a spot in the quarterfinals and continue their title defense.
At this crucial juncture in their campaign, the Pirates have achieved victory. The Soweto giants advanced to the group stage of the CAF Champions League after a 5-0 aggregate triumph over African Stars of Namibia. Their 4-0 home victory in the second leg was due in large part to goals scored by Mpho Padime, Evidence Makgopa, and Mokobodi.
Thus, the Pirates hoped to maintain their winning streak in domestic cup play by bringing their momentum from the continent. They were already under pressure to defend their Carling Knockout title from the previous season, but they were up against a Milford team that was looking to make its mark.
Milford were among the promoted teams making waves in the Betway Premiership going into the match. Before the cup tie, the KwaZulu-Natal club had 15 points from nine league matches, good enough for fourth place. This gave them reason to be confident going into the challenge.
But Pirates were just too strong that nite. Moremi, a winger, scored twice in the 3-0 win, adding to the lead that Mokobodi had already established. Moremi, Thalente Mbatha, and Mpho Padime were all given assists in the three goals according to the match details that were provided.
The outcome advances Pirates to the quarterfinals and provides coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s squad with a second chance to win a trophy after they came so close to winning the MTN8 earlier in the season.
Next up for the Buccaneers is training for Saturday’s Soweto Derby, an encounter with bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs, and the Carling Knockout.
While Pirates can ride high on confidence from another shutout win in their pursuit of trophy defense, Milford’s season comes to an end with the loss.
