Orlando City clash without him – Mbekezeli Mbokazi banned after five yellows – R4k fine confirmed

Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli “TLB” Mbokazi will sit out Chicago Fire’s upcoming MLS fixture against Orlando City after picking up his fifth yellow card of the 2026 regular season — triggering an automatic one-match suspension and a fine of approximately R4,000 ($250).

The fifth caution arrived in the 81st minute of Chicago’s competitive 3–2 victory over Atlanta United on 24 October, pushing him past the league’s disciplinary threshold. Under MLS rules, five bookings result in an immediate ban plus a financial penalty. His teammate Dje D’Avilla faces identical sanctions and will also miss the Orlando City match.

The timing is far from ideal. Mbokazi had strung together six consecutive starts since returning from a thigh injury, recording 40 clearances and four blocks to become a key defensive presence. Orlando City — home to French star Antoine Griezmann — will provide a stern test in his absence.

On a brighter note, Chicago Fire have already secured their place in the 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs, which kick off on 18 November. Mbokazi is expected to be available for selection once more when they face Colorado Rapids next, and will aim to rebuild momentum ahead of the post-season push.
