GoldBod outlines eligibility rules for responsible mining programme

Prince Minkah, Head of Media Relations at GoldBod, has explained the eligibility criteria for the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (RCMSDP), following controversy over comments by the institution’s Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi.

Minkah said Gyamfi’s remarks were intended to clarify which miners could qualify for the programme, not to suggest that illegal mining should be allowed to continue.

He said eligibility depended on applicants being Ghanaian citizens and operating in locations that did not fall within prohibited or environmentally destructive categories.

“The key as far as the eligibility is concerned is you being a Ghanaian citizen,” Minkah said on Channel One TV.

He added that the proposed mining location also had to meet the programme’s requirements and could not fall within prohibited areas, including rivers and water bodies affected by mining.

“The proposed location as stated must fall within prohibited or environmentally destructive categories, including water bodies, rivers affected by mining,” he said.

Minkah explained that miners operating in mineralised areas outside prohibited locations could be documented and transitioned into a more formalised structure.

“As far as the RCMSDP programme is concerned, if you’re not mining within obscene areas and water bodies, and you find yourself in a mineralised area, such people can be documented and then transition into a more formalised structure,” he said.
