Gachagua’s Hidden 2027 Game as Kalonzo, Wamalwa and Sifuna Close Ranks in Wamunyoro, Nyeri

Kenya’s opposition politics is taking a new turn as prominent leaders increasingly converge around former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Wamunyoro home in Nyeri, raising questions about the alliances being shaped ahead of the 2027 General Election.

On Monday, October 26, Wiper patriotic front leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Democratic Action Party of Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa were linked to the emerging political consultations, following earlier engagements involving Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

With 287 days remaining before the next election, Wamunyoro is emerging as a significant meeting point for opposition figures seeking a common strategy to challenge President William Ruto.

The growing attention reflects the political importance of the Mt Kenya region, which overwhelmingly backed Ruto in 2022. Gachagua played a central role in mobilising the region behind the President before their political relationship collapsed.

His current position could therefore prove crucial if opposition leaders hope to attract voters who helped deliver Ruto’s victory.

The Democracy for citizens Party (DCP) reported performance in the Ol Kalou by-election, where it garnered approximately 85 per cent of the vote, has further reinforced perceptions that Gachagua retains considerable grassroots influence.

Rather than openly pursuing the opposition’s presidential ticket, Gachagua has presented himself as a potential unifying figure who could help bring rival camps together before a flagbearer is selected.

Such a strategy could elevate his influence in coalition negotiations, allowing him to shape the opposition’s direction without necessarily becoming its presidential candidate.

However, bringing together leaders with different political ambitions, regional interests and competing support bases remains a major challenge.

Meanwhile, Sifuna continues to attract attention as a possible presidential contender, with some opposition supporters maintaining that he could emerge as the coalition’s preferred candidate even without a fully united alliance.

As consultations gather momentum, the contest is increasingly about more than who will face Ruto. The decisive battle could be over who controls the numbers, negotiates the alliances and ultimately influences the opposition’s choice of flagbearer.
