Not Kindiki: CS Aden Duale Names Top Mt Kenya Leader Who May Become Ruto’s Running Mate in 2027

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has publicly declared his preferred candidate to deputise President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, throwing his weight behind the current Deputy President, Kithure Kindiki.

Duale praised Kindiki’s leadership abilities, describing him as intelligent, well-educated and among the most capable individuals to have held the office. His remarks come amid growing debate over who should occupy the position if Ruto seeks a second term.

Speaking on Sunday, October 25, Duale dismissed suggestions that Kindiki should be replaced by another leader from the Mount Kenya region, arguing that his political potential should not be judged by his county of origin.

“Kenya has the best deputy president ever. In terms of a DP in the context of Kalonzo, Riggy G, Prof. Kindiki is one of the most decent, learned, and intelligent holders of that office,” Duale said.

He also challenged those who believe Kindiki’s background in Tharaka-Nithi County could limit his chances of rising to the presidency.

“Don’t reduce Kindiki to Tharaka. Who told you an intelligent young man from Tharaka-Nithi cannot become the president of Kenya?” he posed.

Duale’s remarks come at a time when Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has expressed interest in becoming Ruto’s running mate in 2027.

Waiguru recently declared her ambition to join the presidential ticket, arguing that women leaders should have an opportunity to compete for senior positions in government.

Her declaration has sparked discussions about whether Ruto will retain Kindiki or consider another candidate as political alignments ahead of the next election begin to take shape.

The competition for the deputy presidency could also be influenced by regional interests and negotiations among political allies seeking a share of power in the next administration.

Duale’s latest remarks appear to strengthen Kindiki’s position within Ruto’s camp, although the final decision on the running mate will rest with the President and the political calculations surrounding his re-election bid.

The debate is expected to intensify as leaders continue positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
