EXPOSED: The Costly Blunder a Bus Driver Made Before 22 Passengers Died in Mombasa Road Accident

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has disclosed that reckless overtaking may have contributed to the fatal accident that claimed 22 lives along the Nairobi Mombasa Highway near Mtito Andei.

The horrific collision occurred on Sunday, October 25, in the Kanga area and involved a church bus belonging to The Power of the Word Church International and a lorry. Sixteen other passengers suffered injuries and were rushed to hospital for medical care.

Preliminary reports suggest that the bus driver was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the bus crashed head-on into the approaching lorry. The manoeuvre may have exposed the bus to danger, leaving the driver unable to avoid the collision.

However, authorities are yet to establish the exact events that led to the deadly crash.

Initial reports indicate that 20 people died at the scene, while two others later died in hospital.

The injured passengers were taken to Makindu Sub-County Hospital and Mtito Andei Hospital for treatment.

The bus was reportedly travelling towards Mombasa carrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony when the accident happened at approximately 7am.In a statement issued on Sunday, NTSA confirmed the tragedy and announced that its investigators were working with the police to determine the cause of the collision.

The authority said preliminary findings pointed to a head-on crash, with improper overtaking identified as a possible contributing factor. Investigations are continuing to establish whether the driver’s actions or other circumstances led to the disaster.

The probe will examine how the two vehicles approached each other and whether the bus had enough room to overtake safely before entering the path of the oncoming lorry.

The accident has renewed concerns about road safety along the busy Nairobi Mombasa Highway, where motorists regularly encounter heavy traffic and large vehicles.Drivers are urged to exercise caution when overtaking and ensure the road ahead is clear before passing other vehicles. A poor decision on the road can have devastating consequences for passengers and other motorists.

NTSA has expressed its condolences to the families and friends of the deceased while wishing those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and determine what led to the tragic loss of 22 lives.
