“Wekea Kalonzo Lami Mpaka Kwa Mlango Wake;” Ruto Makes Surprise Directive in Kitui

President William Ruto has directed contractors working on the Tseikuru Road in Kitui County to extend a tarmac road all the way to the home of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Speaking in Tseikuru before a huge crowd as part of his three-day development tour of the Ukambani region, the Head of State said the former Vice President deserves the gesture, claiming he had been sidelined by previous governments.

“Contractor, wekea Kalonzo lami mpaka kwa mlango wake,” Ruto said in Kiswahili, which translates to “Contractor, put tarmac for Kalonzo all the way to his doorstep.”

According to the President, the contractors constructing the Tseikuru Road should add a three-kilometre diversion linking the main road to Kalonzo’s home, ending right at his gate.

He suggested that the project would address what he described as years of neglect and oppression of the opposition leader under past regimes.

The remarks drew reactions from the crowd that had gathered to listen to the President, who is using the Ukambani tour to launch and inspect development projects. Tseikuru is Kalonzo’s home turf, which gave the President’s remarks added political weight.

The directive comes at a time when political temperatures are rising ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Ukambani widely seen as a key battleground.

Kalonzo remains one of the most prominent opposition figures, and any move by the government in his backyard is likely to be read through a political lens.

Supporters of the President are likely to present the directive as a sign of goodwill and an effort to bring development to an area that has long complained of poor infrastructure.

Critics, on the other hand, may question whether the offer is a genuine development initiative or a calculated political move aimed at winning over Ukambani voters and unsettling the opposition.

It remains to be seen how Kalonzo and his allies will respond to the President’s remarks, and whether the three-kilometre road will indeed be built as directed.

For now, the statement is expected to dominate political conversations across Kitui and beyond, as Kenyans debate whether it is a bold show of generosity or a strategic play in the race to 2027.
