A Man Arrested After Allegedly Spending Ksh. 6.7 Million Mistakenly Deposited Into His Bank Account
A Kenyan man has landed in trouble with the law after allegedly spending Ksh. 6.7 million that was mistakenly deposited into his bank account instead of returning the money to its rightful owner.
Dickson Yiaile Sitei was arrested in Westlands, Nairobi, on Saturday, October 24, 2026, following investigations into the disappearance of millions of shillings accidentally transferred to his account.

According to reports, the incident occurred on November 18, 2025, when a company was processing 74 separate payments, including Ksh. 72,000 for rent at its shop in Suswa.
However, a transaction error reportedly resulted in Ksh. 6,744,354 intended for another business being transferred to Sitei’s bank account.
The company is said to have contacted him and requested the return of the money after discovering the mistake. However, Sitei allegedly spent the funds instead of returning them, prompting efforts to recover the millions.
Detectives from the Banking Fraud Investigation Unit subsequently traced him and arrested him in Westlands as investigations into the matter progressed.
The Director of Public Prosecutions reportedly directed that Sitei face charges relating to the unlawful retention of money received by mistake and money laundering.
He remains in police custody as he awaits his court appearance, where the allegations against him are expected to be addressed through the legal process.
The case serves as a reminder that receiving money accidentally does not automatically make it one’s property. Anyone who receives funds in error is expected to take the appropriate steps to have the money returned to its rightful owner.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has urged Kenyans to exercise caution whenever unexpected deposits appear in their bank accounts and to report such transactions to their financial institutions rather than spending the money.
If proven in court, the allegations could have serious legal consequences for the accused, turning what may have initially appeared to be a financial windfall into a potentially costly legal battle.
