Ruto Suffers Fresh Mt Kenya Blow as Runyenjes MP Dumps UDA in Major Political Shift

Runyenjes MP Eric Muchangi Karemba has ruled out defending his parliamentary seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, becoming the latest Mt Kenya legislator to distance himself from President William Ruto’s ruling party ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Karemba announced his decision as political realignments continue to reshape the region, which played a significant role in Ruto’s victory in the 2022 presidential election.

The legislator, who was elected on a UDA ticket in 2022, made his position clear while addressing residents in Gikuuri, Runyenjes Constituency, Embu County.

In a pointed reference to UDA’s signature wheelbarrow symbol, Karemba indicated that he was ready to return it to its owner, signalling the end of his association with the ruling party.

His decision sets the stage for a new political chapter as he prepares to seek another term in Parliament under a different political platform.

However, Karemba has yet to publicly name the party he will use to defend his seat in the next election.

His exit adds to the growing list of Mt Kenya leaders who have announced their departure from UDA or declared that they will not seek re-election on the party’s ticket.

Among them are Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, who has moved to the People’s Party of Kenya.

The region has also witnessed shifts among governors and senators, with some aligning themselves with rival political parties as the contest for the region’s political support intensifies.

Karemba’s decision is likely to draw attention to the changing political loyalties in Embu County, where the 2027 parliamentary contest will test the strength of competing parties.

With the next General Election approaching, the Runyenjes MP’s next move will be closely watched as he prepares to pursue another term outside the UDA ticket.
