Governor Mutula Kilonzo Issues Statement After Mtito Andei Accident Claims 23 Lives

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr has mourned the 23 people who lost their lives in a tragic road accident near Mtito Andei along the Mombasa Road.

In a statement released on Sunday evening, October 25, the governor described the incident as devastating, noting that the loss of lives was a painful reminder of the need for greater responsibility and caution on Kenyan roads.

Kilonzo said the county government had deployed officers to Mtito Andei Sub-County Hospital to provide psychosocial support to survivors, their families and other people affected by the tragedy.

He explained that the intervention was intended to address the emotional and psychological distress experienced by those struggling to cope with accident.

The governor confirmed that the injured were receiving medical attention at Mtito Andei, Makindu and Kambu sub-county hospitals.

He added that Makindu Sub-County Hospital, which has a specialised trauma centre, was equipped with personnel and facilities to manage the cases.

According to him, no patient had been referred to a hospital outside Makueni County by the time he issued the statement.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased had been taken to Kambu and Mtito Andei mortuaries as families began arrangements following the heartbreaking loss.

Kilonzo also renewed calls for the national government to urgently dual the Mombasa Highway, arguing that the intervention could improve road safety and reduce head-on collisions.

He urged motorists, particularly public service vehicle drivers and heavy commercial truck operators, to observe speed limits, avoid dangerous overtaking and strictly follow traffic regulations.

The governor emphasised that road safety required collective responsibility, calling on all road users to protect lives through careful and disciplined driving.
