NTSA Reveals Suspected Cause of Fatal Nairobi-Mombasa Highway Crash
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has revealed that improper overtaking may have contributed to a deadly road accident involving a public service vehicle (PSV) and a commercial truck along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
The crash occurred on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at Kanga, near Mtito Andei in Makueni County. The incident has left families mourning and raised fresh concerns about road safety on one of Kenya’s busiest highways.
According to NTSA, preliminary reports indicate that the two vehicles collided head-on. The authority said its crash investigation team was working with the police to establish the circumstances that led to the accident.
At least 22 people had been reported dead in earlier updates, while several others sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The number of casualties was still being updated as more information emerged.
The bus involved in the crash reportedly belonged to Power of the Word Church International and was carrying passengers returning from a funeral when the accident happened.
NTSA expressed condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones. It also wished the injured passengers a quick recovery as investigations continued.
The latest tragedy comes just weeks after another deadly crash along the same highway claimed 17 lives in the Salama area on October 3. That accident also raised concerns about dangerous overtaking and the risks faced by passengers travelling on Kenyan roads.
President William Ruto has since directed the thorough inspection of public service vehicles to ensure they meet the required safety standards. The directive comes as authorities face renewed pressure to address the rising number of fatal road accidents.
NTSA has not declared improper overtaking the confirmed cause of Sunday’s crash. Investigators are still working to establish what happened before the vehicles collided.
The incident serves as another warning to motorists to avoid risky overtaking, observe traffic rules and remain alert, especially on busy highways.
What more should authorities do to prevent similar tragedies on Kenyan roads?
