Inside Gachagua’s Gameplan for the 2027 Polls As He Positions Himself As A Central Player

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is positioning himself as a central player in the opposition push to challenge President William Ruto in the August 2027 General Election. The Democracy for the Citizens Party leader plans to consolidate the Mt Kenya vote and use it as leverage.

The region is widely seen as the largest voting bloc in the country. Gachagua believes he still commands strong loyalty there. If he is right he could become president or pick the opposition flagbearer. He could also end up as a running mate.

Recent meetings show he is looking beyond his backyard. He held talks with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna at his Wamunyoro home. Possible contenders for a joint ticket include Gachagua himself, Sifuna and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Gachagua has dismissed claims that the opposition is divided. He insists leaders will make the sacrifices needed to back one candidate. He has even said he could support Sifuna or serve as his deputy if the numbers favour that option.

Mt Kenya elders have also explored reconciliation efforts. These involve figures such as Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

The plan faces real hurdles. There are disputes within the DCP and competing regional ambitions among opposition leaders. President Ruto is also working to win back support in Mt Kenya.

With less than ten months to the polls Gachagua must turn regional influence into a national front. His approach could crown him or an ally. It could also leave the opposition split and give Ruto a better path to a second term.
