Traders at Ubani Ultra-modern Market in Umuahia, Abia State, have appealed to Governor Alex Otti to urgently rehabilitate the market, accusing successive administrations of neglecting the facility 13 years after their relocation from Isigate in 2013. They cited deteriorating shops, poor roads, heaps of refuse, lack of electricity and water, declining patronage and the absence of a promised alternative access road as major challenges threatening their businesses.
The traders also complained that the continued operation of markets around Isigate was diverting customers, while the annual ₦36,000 levy per shop added to their financial burden despite the lack of improvements. Market chairman Prince Chukwemeka Ebubedike said the traders had continued paying the levy but were yet to receive the promised intervention. They urged Otti to repair the market, provide the access road and enforce the relocation policy to restore commercial activities and protect their investments.
