KDF Boxers Win Six Medals as Kenya Shines at African Elite Boxing Championships

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) boxers delivered an impressive performance at the African Elite Boxing Championships in Nairobi, with all six athletes representing the Defence Forces Amateur Boxing Association (DEFABA) in the national team, popularly known as the Hit Squad, securing medals at the continental competition.

The championships were held at the Kasarani Indoor Arena from October 17 to 22, 2026, bringing together boxers from across Africa to compete for honours in one of the continent’s major boxing events.

The KDF contingent finished the tournament with two gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals, giving the six-member team a 100 per cent medal success rate. The achievement highlighted the athletes’ technical ability, determination and preparation against some of the continent’s leading competitors.

orporal Kelvin Maina and Senior Private Friza Asiko led Kenya’s medal charge by winning gold in their respective weight categories. Maina defeated Angola’s Martinho Loureiro Ferreira in the final, while Asiko overcame Egypt’s Hamza Tia to claim the top prize.

Maina’s route to the championship title featured several demanding contests. He first defeated Uganda’s Kakane Bruno in the quarter-finals before overcoming Equatorial Guinea’s Israel Mbaga in the semi-finals. His victory against Angola’s Ferreira in the final capped a strong campaign and earned him continental gold.

Asiko’s triumph added another major achievement to the KDF team’s overall performance, as the military boxers demonstrated their ability to compete successfully against experienced opponents from different African countries.

Corporal Veronica Mbithe also made a significant contribution to the team’s success by winning a silver medal. Her performance complemented the gold-medal victories and further strengthened Kenya’s overall showing at the championships.

Sergeant Edwin Okongo, Corporal Peter Abuti and Chris Ochanda completed the medal tally after each secured bronze. Their performances ensured that every member of the DEFABA contingent returned from the competition with a medal.

The results reflect the role played by military sporting programmes in developing athletes who can represent Kenya at national and international competitions. Boxing demands a combination of physical conditioning, tactical awareness, discipline and mental strength, qualities that competitors must maintain throughout a demanding tournament.

For the Kenya Defence Forces, the achievement also demonstrates how sport can complement military training by encouraging fitness, teamwork, resilience and a strong competitive spirit among service personnel.

The six-medal return is an encouraging outcome for DEFABA and the national Hit Squad, particularly as Kenya continues to build its presence in African boxing. Performances at continental championships provide athletes with valuable international experience and opportunities to measure their progress against opponents from other countries.

The success of Maina, Asiko, Mbithe, Okongo, Abuti and Ochanda has placed the spotlight on the contribution of KDF athletes to Kenya’s sporting ambitions. Their collective performance also illustrates the value of consistent preparation and individual commitment in achieving results at major competitions.

With two continental champions, a silver medallist and three bronze medallists, the KDF boxing team concluded the Nairobi championships with a medal from every athlete it fielded, marking a memorable outing for the Defence Forces and Kenyan boxing.
